Reel to Real: Loving Viewing- The Multicultural Center played the movie Loving which is about an interracial couple that got married and was subsequently forced to leave Virginia or they would have to face time in prison. The movie details the consequences of this marriage as well as how their relationship transformed the country. There were a few things I wondered about while watching this movie: does it have more of an impact now than if it would have had it been made 5-10 years ago and what motivated the film industry to do this film now? While the movie doesn't directly connect to my studies or my personal life, it addresses issues that the country is still dealing with today; such as equality, marriage equality, and racism.
Tsai-Wei Li Pianist Guest- Tsai-Wei Li, a graduate student at Lee University, played a variety of classical pieces from Bach and Beethoven amongst others. The following are some questions I had regarding Li. How long did it take her to memorize these pieces? When did she start playing? Why did she start playing the piano? While this event does not directly connect to my area of studies, I can appreciate her musicianship and dedication to her craft. When I was in elementary, middle, and high school, I was a part of the school band and it was quite the commitment, so I can only imagine how much she has put into this.
Scholars at Risk- A UTC Honor's class, showed a film they created about imprisoned Iranian scholars, Hamid Babaei and Ahmadreza Djalili. There was a presentation as well as a questions/answer session after the film. Some questions I had were how did you, as a whole, decide to focus on the cases you did, what stuck out to you about them, and what has been the general response to the work you have done so far? While this event was not directly related to my studies or my life, but it was interesting to see the students film and their work for the semester, especially since it was done by mostly honors students.
Anatomy of a Gang Investigation- ATF special agent Rich Boehning discussed the anatomy of a gang investigation, specifically, Operation Wheel Confinement. This investigation revolved around the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas. Boehning also discussed smaller events which built up the task force and the importance of the task force itself. Throughout the event I was wondering how individuals were able to decipher all the meaning behind the tattoos and have there been any ATF cases since that was successful as this case? This particular event was quite interesting and informative since I have a criminal justice minor.
